about

Owen Lake and the Tragic Loves‘ “electro-country” sound is both freshly nostalgic and startlingly unique. Hard-driving synthesizer licks meet three-part vocal harmonies, buttery bloops and bleeps, crying pedal steel, and pounding electronic beats in our fun, energetic live shows.

The band’s genre-bending style draws from the traditions of 1960s country, 1980s dream pop, and modern electronic music, mixed with an experimental aesthetic all Lake’s own. It packs an emotional punch to the heart, and invites the bruised listener to dance and cry along.

In 2011, Owen Lake released “A Love on My Mind”, an EP that surprised listeners with the band’s unusual, yet articulate and powerful, blend of its disparate influences.

In 2018, Owen Lake released his second album (and first full-length), The Best of Your Lies, which was named one of the Best Americana Albums of 2018 by Pop Matters .

Events

Aaron Fox, author of Real Country: “The freshest take on country music that you’ll ever hear.”

Ed Whitelock for Pop Matters: The 20 Best Americana Albums of 2018 “The Best of Your Lies…might just be the album that points to the future of country music….There is nothing more American than taking an already established form, breaking it, and blending choice fragments with the broken shards of other influences to craft something new. On The Best or Your Lies, Owen Lake has forged a new path for country music that will surprise many, infuriate some, and, more important, inspire others to follow bravely beyond the pulsing horizon.”

Richard D. Smith writing for The Echo: “Not a straw of satire in this musical haystack. Snyder has a fine country voice, smooth and sincere, expressing controlled heartache.”

Vinyl District: A- “Connects as a surprisingly successful legit fusion….Believe it.”
kleinKultur: “Melancholic lyrics and close-knit vocal harmonies make nice with electronics in Owen Lake’s rare brand of electro-country….The timbral blend heard in Owen Lake’s songs was often mesmerizing.”
